January and February
January and February were full and overflowing with fun things, some big, some small, with some bittersweet mixed in. There were days to catch our breath, move slower and have family time. And then there were days that we wondered how we were going to reach around.
A volley ball game with the youth.
And the younger ones entertaining themselves.
Of course we ended up at our favorite spot by the beach a few times.
The boys were fascinated with the trees and leaves one morning and took a picture.
Kelsey and I buying vegetables from our favorite vegetable stand.
The beginning of January we had missionary retreat. Two days and nights were spent together, teaching, singing, games, conversations; it was a refreshing time! It is a privilege to be part of this mission family
We were so blessed by our speakers and couples from the mission board that came to be part of it as well.
Rene Clugston had so many stories and good, practical advice.
No one ran out of things to say and the conversations always needed to be cut short to stay on schedule. It was such a rich time of fellowship.
We enjoyed having Ron and Marissa Hoover back for a visit, along with their friends.
Kenny's niece came to babysit during retreat and stayed for several weeks. We were both delighted when the village school got a donation of books and they asked us to sort them since we have been working on organizing their library.
One weekend we made a trip to Kumasi to visit friends at a church there. We enjoyed our time learning to know brothers and sisters in Christ.
One Saturday we were going to go to the beach but we ended up getting a storm. Some people decided they could/should still get wet. Having friends staying with us added to the fun and they were all soaked to the skin and muddy till they came inside.
An evening playing cards with friends.
Celebrating Kyla's birthday. The children are really enjoying their school days with her!
There was a random bull roaming around that day. He considered joining the birthday party but moved on to our relief.
The bittersweet part of February was saying good bye to the Weiler family. Gary and Whit spent 5 years in Ghana and we will miss them. He is continuing as administrator of the Vo-Tech school until a replacement is found.
Our church family gave them this painting, painted by Joel, the man in the wheel chair.
Demolition is slowly happening along the N1, the main road through our area. Eventually it will be a 4 lane highway, which will be very nice. But we dread the dust, mud, and confusion that is sure to happen between now and then. And how long will it take?
We had several heavy rains in February which is a little unusual. But we enjoy the green grass and cooler weather it brought. We mowed twice in the past few weeks which is very unusual for this time of year.
An ice cream treat after a busy week of hosting and running. One of our guests thanked me for everything we did while they were here and later Austin said, people feel bad for us because we are missionaries and live in Ghana, but they have no idea how much fun we have! That isn't always his attitude but I was thankful for the discussion that followed about how we don't get to do things other people do in the US, but we do get to experience many things other people don't and are blessed to have this opportunity.
I don't know if you can see it or not but the back window of this trotro says, Pray for Drivers. With a load like that, I think he might need prayers! But in all seriousness, we pray for safety on the roads many times. It is nothing short of a miracle that none of our staff has been involved in a bad accident. With overloaded vehicles travelling at high speeds, slow vehicles combined with speeding vehicles means a lot of dangerous passing, and many trucks and busses on the roads, driving can be far from relaxing!
