August

After the busyness of the last several months, August was definitely quieter. Which was a good thing since we officially started school the first week of August. We had worked ahead in July in Math and Language, which I am sure we will be very thankful for at the end of the term. It takes a lot of the stress of having to keep up out of my life. 
A friend brought me sourdough starter awhile ago and Kelsey has taken it over from me. She loves trying new things.
The road to our village has been a work in progress ever since we lived here. The humps and bumps have been a source of frustration and irritation but we have gotten used to them. Every year, one section of the road floods and all the vehicle owners in our village complain and then promptly forget about it in dry season when something could be done. The Ghanaian ambassador to Canada has a house in our village and she got the ball rolling to officially fix the road. They are putting gutters in and supposedly it will eventually be paved!

A good portion of my morning is spent teaching and then usually we finish a few things in the afternoon. If I keep up with checking as they finish their work, I usually don't need to spend much time with school work outside the actual teaching time. And can get a few things done in between answering questions.

Barry and Elaine Burkholder visited Ghana. The children claim them as one of their sets of grandparents, they couldn't decide if it is 3rd or 4th. Since they are long time friends of Kenny's parents, they feel a little like family.

We attended the graduation at New Hope.

For years some of my kitchen cupboards were getting eaten by bugs. The project of replacing eaten wood, sanding and painting is taking much longer since I do all the painting in my spare time. However, it is progressing. This picture was right after taking the one top cupboard down. I like how big it made my kitchen feel, but I still value my cupboard space too much to leave it that way!

Twice a week we have Fante class with Lavern and Sherri at their house. Kelsey took this picture one evening when it was full moon.

Kelsey turned 16 the last day of August and the ladies wanted to do something special for her. They put together a very nice lunch and we even managed to surprise her.
I am so thankful for our mission family and the way they include and take time for our children. Occasionally one of the boys will say they wish there were more children to play with but normally there are a few boys their age at church so they really enjoy that interaction.

We are so thankful for the normal weeks of just doing life as a family. Kenny has been feeling the pressure of the church schedule and keeping up with Bible Studies and people, so we were very excited to hear that someone is coming to help fill in the gap till Marvins come back. And as a bonus, they are good friends of ours! Andy and Amy Nolt are preparing to go on furlough in October and one of our board members is coming to help fill in over that time as well. God continues to provide people and help when we need it most!

    Every Sunday morning and one Wednesday evening a month you will find us gathered at Abbina Mennonite church.  We sit on a mixture of plastic chairs and wooden benches. And we ourselves are quite a mixture. Besides our mission families there are two to three native adults that attend regularly and then anywhere from 15 to 50 children, ages 2 to 18. This means that it is not a matter of training our own children to sit quietly during church, it also means training other peoples children to sit quietly. It can be quite a challenge and some Sundays are great and some, hardly anyone gets much out of the sermon. The children love to sing and lately we sing the song at the beginning of this post almost every Sunday. Sometimes when I sing a song over and over I forget about the words but the words in this song have started catching my attention. Especially when so much energy and passion is put into singing them! We Are Not Home Yet

   This story is one Kenny came across and it was at a time that I needed to hear it. I did some research and even though some accounts of the story say it was Theodore Roosevelt that was the politician and Henry Morrison was the missionary, I also found places that it is a fictional story. For that reason, I am going to tell the story as we first heard it, without any names.         A missionary and his wife were sailing home from serving most of their lives on the mission field in Africa. They were tired, worn out and discouraged from the many hard things they had faced over the past 40 years. They had given their all and were coming home with nothing to show for it.   On this same boat was a politician who had just spent ten days in Africa hunting big game. Greetings once again! Just a few quick pictures and update on our lives. We have celebrated several birthdays with family and friends. If I don't feel like cooking all I need to do is plan a coal pot meal and the children fight over who gets to cook! Kenny has kept busy with Salt savings share outs. The children and Amanda keep busy at school. I miss teaching but it also takes a lot of stress out of my life to have a teacher! We enjoyed s'mores and a bonfire with friends. Marvin and Grace Zeiset came to visit for two weeks. In the middle of their stay, Ron and Marissa Hoover flew back to the US suddenly for health reasons and Marvins graciously agreed to stay until Joel Burkholders were back from furlough. They helped Jodi hold down the fort in Assomdree. And as the picture above shows, Grace was a wonderful grandma to any child that came near her. We had a very special day, mid November.
